Do you have a tattoo?

2868418191_3eec6e50c8_mWhen we recently read about an engaged single mom blogger’s tattoo idea, we chuckled.

You see, that blogger known as Mommy Pie loves the ring that her fiance gave her last spring, but she admits that both she and her man are “those non-ring wearing” types. (If you missed how her fiance proposed to on the blog Proposal 2.0, you can read about his marriage proposal here.)

That’s exactly why Mommy Pie is proposing a new marriage tradition: she and her fiance are thinking about getting ring tattoos that will keep “with the spirit and symbolism of the ring.”

“Instead of a ring, maybe I’ll just have his FACE tattooed on my fingertip,” she jokes. “It IS permanent, after all, and that way he’ll always be with me, regardless of distance.”

This all makes us curious: do you have a tattoo? — or, are thinking about getting one?

We’d love to hear what image (or images!) you have. What do they symbolize for you?

Did anyone get a tattoo in honor of their children?

Are more tattoos (or, maybe a first tattoo)  on your wish list?

We’d love to hear all the details! Please do share.

Just so you know: Neither Dr. Leah nor Single Mom Seeking has a tattoo tale to share. (Are you surprised?)

I have two: one is an Irish claddagh (representing love, loyalty, and friendship) on my ankle; one is the Chinese symbol for strength on the back of my neck. The claddagh is an homage to my Irish heritage; the strength was something I desperately needed in my life at the time.

The Man and I would like to get matching or coordinating tattoos at some point. Now the task is deciding exactly what…

I have the Chinese symbol for Mama between my shoulder blades. I got it when The Boy was 3 months old. I have plans to get my kids’ birthdays underneath it.

I also want to get a great big phoenix on my back. Below the strapless dress line, filling my back to the right of my spine. To me, the phoenix represents how I have been reborn in each of my experiences in life.

I got one about 6 months after my divorce was final. I was never into ink, but mssinglemama blogged about getting one, and it turned my head. I started thinking about my need for a permanent testament to myself, something to remind me of what I’d gone through, and wouldn’t allow myself to go through again. I designed it myself after much research. It looks like a plant/butterfly (the butterfly effect was not my intention, but kind of cool, nonetheless), and is made up of ancient symbols that represent growth, awareness, progress, potential power, and the human spirit. It also has some bamboo leaves that are tinged with blue (the color of my son’s birthstone), and pink (the color of mine). Bamboo is a symbol of simplicity, flexibility, and strength. I had a little remorse afterwards (and my parents were NOT happy — haha! I’m only 35!), but now I love it. Every time I catch a glimpse of it in the mirror (it’s on my back), I get a little thrill of freedom and power.

I love tattoos. I currently have two right now. The ever popular butterfly on my ankel I got on my 18th birthday and then when I was 22 years old I got a dream catcher on the lower part of my back. I have always loved dream catchers and what they symbolize. I have plans of getting one more, something that symoblizes my children. Not 100 % sure where I am going to get it though. When I was younger and talking about tattoos with my mother she always had one rule… as long as it was covered up by a wedding dress. Both of mine were at the time of my wedding but sense I am divorced, a single mother, and probably never going to get married again… and frankly if I do I highly doubt I will be wearing a wedding dress I think I have earned the right to put my future tats where ever I see fit.

tattoos… two going on three… someday.

Call me crazy, but… do not like tattoos. Not on men. Not on women. I have gotten used to seeing the occasional small tattoo on a woman (an ankle, a shoulder blade), and I’m all for whatever makes someone happy.

So – more power to whomever wants to make art of their flesh, if they so choose. No needles to celebrate anything for me. On the other hand, the right pair of Christian Louboutins are a work of art…

I’ve got a tat on my ankle, done the day I turned 18.

If you check out my avatar on my blog or Twitter, you’ll see the tat I got done when Mook was about 2. It has her initials (MSJ) inside a star design I adapted from a pair of her footie pjs. It is on the inside of my right wrist, so it’s always within sight.

Wow, I love the way you’re describing your tattoos mamas! For a future post, Dr. Leah and I should post photos. Yes?

@LittleBigWolf: Honestly, I’m not sure if I see a tattoo in my future, either…

I have a tattoo between my shoulder blades. It’s two koi fish in a ying yang, which represents Pisces, my zodiac sign. I got it when I was 19. I’ve always wanted another one to represent me and my son, but I’m not sure where to put it on my body…

My right arm and shoulder is dedicated to my children. I have two angel statues with their names below each one currently, with more to come below.
My back is dedicated to my family and my heritage. I am Irish by decent. I have my family crest in the center of my back, with celtic knotting coming out from both sides out to my shoulder blades.

I have many good friends who are tattoo artists. I’m too flakey/indecisive to get a tattoo. At each stage of my life I was like “this is what I want”…and then at the next stage, I’m sooo glad I didn’t get it.

One of my tattoo artist friends specializes in covering up tattoos that include names of ex-girlfriends/wives. The fact that it is a specialization within the industry should either make you more comfortable knowing that it can be changed in the future…or more nervous because so many are changing them!

I love tattoos…on other people. I’m still really glad I didn’t get the hookah-smoking caterpillar on top of a red and white polka dotted mushroom that I was determined to get in Singapore when I was 15. (It was legal there.)

Hmm, Chai Girl makes a great point. Think about the number of times you’ve been in love, marriages, remarriages… and wasn’t it Angelina Jolie who had to cover up one of her more prominent name tattoos as she moved on to another part of life?

EEEEK. If you tracked the trail of love affairs via inked skin, that brings a whole new meaning to the permanent record…

I’ll stick to a trinket for my charm bracelet, a love letter or a snapshot. Or there’s always henna.

I have two tattoos. One was from when I was 17 years old and my dad said I could have one. I chose a single red rose on my upper shoulder, for no reason other than it was pretty. My second is more recent, about a couple months old only. It’s a gerbera daisy with two little yellow bugs on it — one for me, and one for my son. (here’s a pic: http://themomblog.freedomblogging.com/2009/08/17/a-bug-tattoo-to-prove-my-love/29773/) The flower was the main flower in my wedding to my baby daddy, so it’s basically to symbolize that even though we aren’t married, we’re still part of a family. I adore my tattoo, and will most likely get more.

p.s. my parents both have tattooed wedding rings, flowers around both of the left ring fingers.

i have many tattoos, my favorite is on my hip- my whole hip- it took two separate 7 hour sessions, i also have them on my wrist, ankle and upper arm. What can I say- I am a child of San Francisco in the late 80’s.
Each has its own meaning, was done by an artist and can be covered up- I ‘clean-up’ very nicely.
My next tattoo will be my daughter’s initials on my right hand ring finger- now I wear a ring there to remind me of my commitment to myself. her initials- xazb will be gorgeous. can’t wait.

After you finally make up your mind to get a tattoo, the most important and hardest decision to make are what tattoo design to get and where on your body you should get it at. However, it is paramount to stay away from tattoo trends.

This is because there is a very high likelihood that your tattoo design that was once popular will not look so great a few years down the lane. After all trends or fads fade out of style all the time. The best piece of advice is just to simply stay away from tattoo trends, unless it is something that you truly want and can live with forever.
