Hmm, well, I've read all the books and seen the movies. I have a tween daughter and two teenage nieces. (I read them originally because one of my nieces was reading the series and I couldn't believe she was old enough for that stuff lol) It's like any other book out there. It's all in how you handle it. I personally have used it as a discussion starter on things like...what to look for in a relationship, what mistakes do you think they made, there isn't some special "one" out there just waiting for us, consequences, honesty and communication in relationships, etc. We've also used it to talk about the fact that we are the sum of our choices, not our births, our colors, our relatives or our circumstances. We are responsible for what we do with what we're given be it a large inheritance or a tendency to "fursplode" into a wolf on occasion (btw, if we're being technical, he's not a werewolf, he's a shifter, hahahaha, just having some fun there.) Could I also pick out all sorts of negatives and things I wish weren't in there, heck yeah! To me, books are what you make them. I could write an essay on both pro and con sides of the Twilight theme, but then I could do the same thing for Cinderella. Take every tool, book and craze and make it work for you folks!!!

Yeah...that's a great question. I don't know if the vampire stuff worries me...I just think it's a weird phenomenon. I thought the same thing about Harry Potter, but now I understand why HP is so cool. Maybe one day I'll actually read or see Twilight and enjoy that too. I guess it's a good way to get tweens reading (at least the girls), but for now, I think all the hype is out of control.

@Anna: Thank goodness we have a middle school teacher/vampire reader/werewolf expert in the mix! Thanks SO much for that correction.

OK, Taylor Lautner doesn't play a vampire -- he plays a werewolf...
Yes, I just read all four books, partly because I'm a middle school teacher and wanted to see what all the girls were swooning about. They're good quick reads for adults, heavy on the romance, but book 4 (Breaking Dawn) definitely has more adult themes than the other 3. I am in shock that some of my 6th graders have read this last book!! I think girls are in love with the characters, and less the fact that they are vampires (and werewolves!). Plus, the vampires (in this saga) are portrayed as not quite fitting in, with which lots of kids easily associate. I don't see any gender issues in the books, and I don't feel overly concerned about the craze. Just steer your less mature readers away from book 4...

So...*sigh* My daughter is 4, going on 5. I haven't let her see twilight, but she watches Vampire Diaries on the CW. It's "our show".

The kid also has had massive crushes on her classmates since she was 3. So there are times when she'll say something about how a vampire is cute. However, I'm less worried about her exposure to it than our ability to discuss such things. We always talk through stuff on TV shows to put it into the real-life context - including TV crushes.

No interest in seeing this... really don't understand the craze...

MindyMom said it right: this movie is just the flavor of the month for teens. Just like my generations craze was for New Kids on the Block... however, I am kind of surprised by the craze of grown women....

I saw the first movie with my now 15 y/o and I can understand the draw. It was a good story and there was great chemistry between the two co-stars. That always helps make a romantic story work well.

As for the grown women going all crazy? Yeah, that's nuts. But it's to be expected from teen girls - that's been going on forever. This movie is just the flavor of the month - or year.

My girls aren't old enough for the books, and the vampires stuff in general doesn't bother me, but my opinion of them was definitely skewed to the negative after reading this B*tch magazine article that deemed the series "abstinence porn" with some problematic gender themes. (warning: book spoilers contained)

Personally, I don't "get" the Twilight thing. I've never read the books, and haven't seen the first movie. It's just not anything that interests me.

Like anything that's massively trendy, this, too, shall pass into oblivion some day. ;-)
