US Supreme Court’s Sonia Sotomayor raised by single mom

When we heard that President Barack Obama had selected Sonia Sotomayor as the newest Supreme Court nominee, we emailed each other right away with shrieks of joy.
We’re very proud of the fact that Sonia was raised by a single mother.
We got emotional when Judge Sotomayer talked about her mom:
“I stand on the shoulders of countless people. Yet there is one extraordinary person who is my life aspiration — that person is my mother, Celina Sotomayor,” said Sonia Sotomayor, 54, just minutes after President Obama nominated her to replace Justice David Souter.
Sonia’s father, a Puerto Rican laborer, died when she was nine. Sonia’s mother, also from Puerto Rico, raised her and her younger brother alone in a housing project in the Bronx. Her mother was a nurse who worked with heroin addicts, and at age eight, Sonia was diagnosed with Type I diabetes.
If confirmed, Judge Sotomayer will become the first Hispanic and third woman to sit on the bench in America’s highest court.
Judge Sotomayer says that she knew at age 1o that she’d be an attorney. She got a scholarship to study at Princeton, and then went onto Yale Law School, followed by a job at the high-powered Manhattan District Attorney’s office.
We salute Celina Sotomayor as she watches her daughter make history.
Please tell us:
If you could sit and down and talk with this proud single mother, what questions would you ask ?
What lessons about single parenting could Sonia’s mother teach us?

I would ask how she got through the preteen and teenaged years. What were the magic tricks that have to happen for everyone to stay sane with a teenaged/tween girl.

So much for Ann Coulter’s theory all kids of single mothers turn into criminals and degenerates.
